As much as I think we should focus completely on regaining Champions League status for next season, it would be great to see us lift the League Cup for an 8th time. It may not be rated highly by many people but for me it’s still a major trophy that we should aim to win. It’s been good enough for us to win on seven separate occasions in the past, and it forms a part of our history that I’m proud of.
With that being said, I don’t think it’s worth risking the likes of Luis Suarez in this competition, especially not at these early stages as has been the case in previous rounds. If we can progress at this stage with a mixture of youth and first team players who aren’t playing regularly, then it would be worth starting with more of our important players should we reach the semis.
It will be interesting to see what line-up Dalglish selects for this match, bearing in mind we have a tough away fixture at W.B.A. on Saturday. I’d go with the following team in a 41221 formation with Bellamy and Maxi supporting Carroll:
