Man of the Match: Fernando Torres Vincente del Bosque had to swallow a bit of pride to reintroduce a striker into his side, and it paid dividends as Torres looked like the player of old – bagging a brace in a lively performance.

Spain verdict: Sublime on the ball and tidy when passing it, Spain produced another of those performances which left the opposition chasing shadows. It was far too easy for Spain and there will be tougher tests ahead.

Ireland verdict: The Irish got unlucky with the group draw, but their big game was against Croatia. Defeat in that game meant qualification was always unlikely and yet another early goal highlighted their soft underbelly.

Could do better: Shay Given The veteran goalkeeper did not look fully fit and could have done better on a number of occasions. What must be the Aston Villa goalkeeper’s swansong in international football did not end well.

Stat attack: Spain made 859 passes in the game.
